Metro Christchurch update on Fare Price Increase on July 7th

From July 7, 2025, tertiary students in Christchurch will pay 150% more for public transport as the discount fare card that kept prices low since 2022 comes to an end. The price will rise from $1.00 to $2.50 for each bus ride. Ferry fares for students will also increase, from $2.00 to $4.50 under the Youth rate.

On why the price was increased, Metro noted that the tertiary discount had always been part of a trial program, and this trial is coming to an end since many students already qualify for other discounts, like the Youth fare (for those aged 19–24) or the Community Services Card fare. The Tertiary Student Metrocard, which currently allows eligible students to travel by bus for just $1.00 per ride, will no longer be offered from July. Instead, most students will be migrated to the Youth fare, which costs $2.50 per trip.

Metro says students who hold a Community Services Card should apply this concession to their existing Metrocard, which will keep their bus fare at a more affordable $1.50 per trip.
